Entry 21.

Naz Smouna - Junior Producer, EDNAEDNA

We are BACK after the worlds longest hiatus (oops!) with possibly our favourite Brews & Qs to date! We knew as soon as we met her that we absolutely needed her as part of our team; she's an EDNA through and through and we cannot wait to see what she continues to bring to the role and the company...

NAME:

Naz Smouna

JOB TITLE:

Junior Producer / Social Media Manager

COMPANY:

EDNAEDNA

BIO:

Navigating an array of creative roles across industries, including curation, social media, and project management, Naz brings a multi-pathway perspective to creative coordination. Since 2020, she has co-directed and mentored at LUVA gallery, leveraging her technical and logistical experience in visual practice and experiential production. She is now bringing all of her creativity and production expertise to EDNAEDNA!

HOW DO YOU TAKE YOUR TEA (OR COFFEE)...VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION!

I’m rather partial to a strong breakfast tea - leave the bag in, and maybe a sugar if I'm feeling spicy.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND WHY EDNAEDNA FELT LIKE A GOOD FIT?

Having studied fine art and specialised in 'cross-dimensional' mediums (I know, that's a mouthful), I spent quite a lot of time exploring space, setting, and its impact on the audience. With a background in curation, exhibition production, and fresh experience in more commercial events, working for EDNAEDNA felt like a natural progression and an exciting next chapter.

WHO DO YOU THINK IS DOING EXCEPTIONALLY CREATIVE WORK IN THE EXPERIENTIAL SPACE RIGHT NOW?

For those who haven't gathered from our EDNA’s Picks, it's fair to say I'm a bit of a Pixelart fan. Having had the opportunity to attend a few of their exhibits in London, their limitless response to physical boundaries never ceases to inspire me. Injecting spaces with breathtaking visuals and animations, they harness and develop immersive technologies such as 3D mapping, projections, cross-interface applications, and real-time interactions. No matter the context, their playful, phygital approach unapologetically self-promotes, captivating imaginations.

WHAT IS THE BEST IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE YOU'VE ATTENDED?

An unforgettable experience for me was 'yellowbluepink' by Ann Veronica Janssens, hosted in the Wellcome Collection (one of my fave galleries). The setup, though technically simple, was highly transformative. After being carefully counted in and out (to avoid losing any participants), two heavy-duty doors opened into a hall of projected masses of colour. Venturing into the pastel void, its disorientingly thick fog engulfed me in ombre, blurring everything beyond my fingertips. By eliminating all awareness of space and direction, it encouraged reliance on other senses for navigation, awakening a newfound perception of consciousness. Memorably alarming yet ethereal, I imagine it's the closest I'll get to walking through a rainbow!

WHAT IS IT THST SPARKS YOUR CREATIVITY?

It feels like a truly pivotal time to be working in the creative industries. The digital collision with our evolving social climate seems like an exciting adaption of how we approach people and spaces. The continuous shift in our interactions, perceptions, and ultimately dimensions is a subject that really captivates me! And don't even get me started on the expanding intersection between sociology and the online—data-driven commentary, archival practice, and basically anything creatively documenting our weird and wonderful world has always influenced my work.

WHAT'S BEEN YOUR FAVE PROJECT THAT YOU'VE WORKED ON SO FAR FOR EDNA?

I relish the wild variety of people and contexts that I get to experience with EDNAEDNA. From wizards on tricycles to Y2K flip-phone parties, no day is ever the same! It's a tough choice, but our activation with Tatoodo is a strong contender. Stationed in the heart of Shoreditch, we created a pop-up tattoo shop to host the highly anticipated weekend. Conquering the daunting experience of a first tattoo with a free flash, we welcomed an extremely long queue of excited guests. Custom-made candles and post-tattoo skincare added a sensual touch to the space, elevating a chill and bespoke experience.

Working alongside artists and practitioners from different fields is always rewarding, playing fly on the wall to their creative process and techniques, while standing back and watching as fears were overcome and memories sparked.

...And that is why we LOVE having Naz as part of the team; endlessly creative, a proper grafter and just really bloody lovely!!
